Basically, it replaces all characters that can be substituted with a single one

For example, take the roman numeral Ⅷ

if your text contains the text "VIII", it would be replaced with the roman numeral version, which in this case saves 3 characters!

So its useful for stuff that has a text length limit like profile bio, text message, etc.
